Travel Log

After dosing Jasper all night with antibiotics, calpol and ibuprofen, he was back on the mend, and we could continue with the plan to take the tracing up to Gornergrat today. The weather forecast was very good too.

After another big breakfast (well, Jasper just on the yogurt as he couldn’t really swallow) we walked to the station. It was about a half an hour journey to Gornergrat and we got good seats on the right hand side of the train (with the views towards the valley and Matterhorn). We took a notepad and played some hangman to pass the time.

When we arrived it was cold (as expected - we had packed gloves, hats, warm coats) and cloudy. No views yet, so we started with the indoor stuff with the VR experience and the mini museum. When we came out it was blue sky and glorious sunshine. The views were epic. The Matterhorn gets the attention for its shapeliness, but for me it was the endless snow and glaciers of the Monte Rosa massif that was truly breathtaking.

We took the 20 minute hike along the ridge to a 360 degree viewpoint. The kids built some cairns to add to the collection. After exploring the shops we decided to walk down to Rotenboden station and get on the train there. This meant we could enjoy the views at walking speed plus check out Riffelsee lake and its reflections of the Matterhorn.

The trail was rocky and fun and we made good time. Jasper and Nick descended to the lake while the girls waited at the rocks by the station.

Back in town we did a spot of souvenir shopping, with Jasper buying a penknife keyring.

Obligatory swim and hot tub followed by an evening stroll for gelato.

Tonight is our last night in Zermatt and it’s been lovely. It’s a great town, and the fact that’s it’s car free makes it really accessible on foot, and good for the step count! Everyone has also been super friendly and welcoming, not to mention speaking impeccable English.
