Day 6 - Zermatt pottering in town
2025 Switzerland day 6
Travel Log
Today was a slow pace day, partly due to the rain forecast for the morning but also because Jasper was sick with tonsillitis. Getting antibiotics for Jasper via our travel insurance turned out to be surprisingly painless.
Nick went for a run (walk) up to Chalet Edelweiss some 400m above Zermatt - straight up and straight down. No views from the chalet due to the low cloud and drizzle, but perfect running weather to keep cool.
We took a load of laundry to the local laundromat and bought some very expensive Swiss chocolate on the way back through town. Come to think of it the laundry cost more than the chocolate!
Later on Nick took the girls to the museum - an entertaining subterranean series of exhibits on old life in Zermatt replete with reconstructed houses and excessive taxidermy. We especially liked the bit on the history of climbs on the Matterhorn, learning about Edward Whymper and 6 other climbers who pipped the competing Italian team to the summit, but tragedy struck on the descent with one mountaineer slipping, causing four to fall and the rope to snap. Just three returned. There was a really neat 3D model of the Matterhorn with buttons to press to illuminate the various routes to the summit and the date and party of first ascent.
Of course we had the mandatory gelato plus a swim.
Jasper fell asleep at about 7pm after his first dose of antibiotics.
