Travel Log

Even with a very late night last night Jasper and Bess were still awake at 6:30am (UK 5:30am!) to look out the window and see the mountains in the dawn. Luckily they went back to sleep for a bit.

Breakfast was fresh baguette and coffee. Chamonix coming alive early and the view of Mont Blanc becoming crisper as the clouds lifted.

As well as the bakery, we also went to our favourite outdoor shop to buy some new clothes for the holiday.

We made full use of the spa facilities before checking out, with the kids loving the cold plunge and room with ice! The hot tub was lovely and the sauna just right.

We broke the drive to Zermatt with a stop at the Emosson dam, taking a short but steep hike up to the Six Jeurs for nice views and trails to ourselves. I’m not sure what the “six games” the peak was referring to, but we enjoyed it all the same. Thea of course wanted to also be the leader, so we had to restart our previous holiday rule that henceforth “leader” is now a swear word and cannot be uttered.

The drive to Tasch (as Zermatt is car-free so this is the closest we could get) was easy, with Thea paying the princely sum of a snow globe for a wee in a gas station. The Swiss trains are exceptional and soon we were in Zermatt for a chauffeur ride in an electric wagon to our hotel, complete with James Bond esque entrance via an underground tunnel (honestly, how does Alex find these places!).

After marvelling at the apartment and the size of the balcony, we then headed into town to buy some food for dinner and soak up the buzz of Zermatt.

We were back in time for the kids to go in the hot tub, though I still haven’t found where the nudest sauna is…
